Workshop on Sound Institutional Environment, Cooperation, Dialogue and Partnerships for the Production and Utilization of SDG Indicators

The Workshop on Sound Institutional Environment, Cooperation, Dialogue and Partnerships for the Production and Utilization of SDG Indicators was organised by the United Nations Economic and Social Council for Western Asia (UNESCWA) in collaboration with the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) and hosted by Statistics Tunisia on 6-8 February 2018 in Tunis, Tunisa. Dr. Atilla KARAMAN, Researcher, represented the SESRIC thereat.

The Workshop on Sound Institutional Environment, Cooperation, Dialogue and Partnerships for the Production and Utilization of SDG Indicators was attended by 36 representatives from 15 National Statistical Offices and relevant agencies of Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, and Yemen, and 16 representatives of the other national, international and regional organisations including AITRS, FAO, GCCStat, Italy, SESRIC, UNEP, UNESCWA, UNFPA, and UNSD.

During the three days, the Workshop covered the following topics:

  • Institutional Framework
  • Governance, programmatic tools and funding mechanisms
  • Leadership, partnership, communication and dialogue
  • Quality assurance and quality monitoring
  • Moderated discussion and conclusion on UN Handbook of Statistical Organisations

During the first session titled “Institutional Framework” on the first day of the Workshop, Dr. Atilla KARAMAN delivered a presentation that focused on the interim results of the Tendency Survey on SDG Priorities of OIC Member Countries. Additionally, during the “Moderated Discussion and Conclusion” session on the third day of the Workshop, Dr. KARAMAN informed the participants about the several initiatives of the Centre including the OIC Statistical Capacity Building Programme and OIC-PEER Project.

The Workshop addressed the institutional environment for official statistics in support of monitoring progress towards the SDGs, including governance, leadership, coordination mechanisms and tools as well as dialogue and partnership between producers and users of data and statistics. 

The Workshop also collected the critical input from the participants for the update of the  UN Handbook on Statistical Organisations with the aim of providing guidance and best practices to achieve a modern, more integrated and coordinated national statistical system.
