SESRIC Participated in the Second Workshop on Modernization of Official Statistics in the State of Qatar

SESRIC participated in the Second Workshop on Modernization of Official Statistics in the State of Qatar organised by the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics (MDPS) in Doha, Qatar on 25-26 September 2018.

The Workshop aimed at resuming the dialogue that began last year during the First Workshop on Modernization of Official Statistics held in December 2017 to determine the priorities of transformation in the National Statistical System (NSS) in Qatar in partnership with various stakeholders.

The Workshop was attended by the international experts from the National Statistical Offices (NSOs) of United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Italy, SESRIC, the National Statistical Offices of United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA), Qatar Computing Research Institute, Qatar Foundation, Qatar Development Bank, Microsoft, as well as officials and experts from the executive ministries, universities, research centres and NGOs.

At the event, SESRIC highlighted its commitment to facilitate the flow of knowledge among OIC countries and relevant stakeholders based on South-South and Triangular cooperation approach. In this regard, the Centre collects information from the NSOs of OIC countries by conducting biennial questionnaire to identify statistical needs and capacities of the NSOs and facilitates the exchange of experts among OIC countries. Since the first inception of OIC Statistical Capacity Building (StatCaB) Programme in 2007, the Centre has organised over 330 statistical capacity building programmes with the participation of experts and high-level officials from the NSOs and other constituents of the National Statistical Systems (NSSs) of OIC countries.

In addition, the issues on priority actions and measures to improve the production of accurate and reliable statistics, innovation in many statistical areas such as data collection, compilation and dissemination, innovation on the use of new data sources and issues on how to achieve the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 were discussed during the Workshop.
