SESRIC Becomes a Member of EGRIS to Strengthen the Synergies on Refugee Statistics

Date : 04 September 2018 Venue : Ankara Türkiye

SESRIC has become a member of the Expert Group on Refugee and Internally Displaced Persons Statistics (EGRIS) on 4 September 2018.

SESRIC has indicated its membership interest to the EGRIS during the Seventh Session of the OIC-StatCom organised this year at SESRIC Headquarters in Ankara, Turkey. The Seventh Session of OIC-StatCom - held between 02 and 03 May 2018 - covered the theme ‘Enhancing the Production, Dissemination, and the Use of Migration Statistics’, as a follow-up to the UN Statistical Commission (UNSC) Work Programme on Refugee and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Statistics.

The EGRIS has the objective to improve international refugee statistics through development of international recommendations on how to collect, compile and disseminate statistics on refugees.

As a member of EGRIS, SESRIC has generously offered to host the Third Global Meeting of EGRIS in Ankara, Turkey on 12-14 February 2019.

EGRIS was established in accordance with the decision of the 47th Session of the UNSC in 2016, against the backdrop of an ever-growing number of forcibly displaced persons worldwide as well as mixed practices on refugee and IDP statistics. Co-led by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Statistics Norway and Eurostat, the Expert Group’s primary mandate is to develop “recommendations on refugee statistics, as a reference guide for national and international work concerning asylum statistics”.
