Training Course on 'Health Statistics' in Bangladesh

In accordance with its 2015 Annual Work Plan and within the framework of the Statistical Capacity Building (StatCaB) Programme, SESRIC organised the training course on 'Health Statistics' at the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) in Dhaka, People’s Republic of Bangladesh on 11-13 August 2015. The course was conducted by Mr. Gantjang Amannullah, Head of Social Statistics Division at the East Java Regional Office of BPS-Statistics Indonesia, with the participation of relevant officials of the BBS.

As defined in the Classification of Statistical Activities (CSA Rev. 1 - October 2009); health statistics – a statistical activity category under the Social and Demographic Statistics domain – covers the health and mortality related statistical activities, including topics like life expectancy, health status, health and safety, health determinants (including lifestyle, nutrition, smoking, alcohol abuse), health resources and expenditure, health care systems, morbidity and mortality (including infant and child mortality), hospital admission, causes of illness and death, specific diseases (e.g. AIDS), disabilities, pharmaceutical consumption and sales, health personnel, remuneration of health professions, environmental health status, health inequality, health accounts.

The training course on 'Health Statistics' featured case studies and focused on the following topics:

    • Crude and Age-specific Rates
    • Infant Mortality Rate and Expectation of Life
    • Cause of Death and Mortality Determinant
  • Fertility
    • Measuring Fertility and Proximate Determinant of Fertility
    • Background to Fertility and Fertility Differentials
  • Health Status and Health Safety
  • Health Determinant
  • Morbidity
  • Health Accounts and Health Expenditures
