BPS-Statistics Indonesia and Ministry of Home Affairs of Republic of Indonesia released the Results of the 2020 Population Census (PC2020) on 21 January 2021 in Jakarta, Indonesia. PC2020 has been constructed and implemented as an attempt to manifest the One Indonesian Population Data.

The key findings from PC2020 are as follows:

• The total population of Indonesia in September 2020 reached 270.2 million people. This number is based on the results of Online Population Census conducted between February and May 2020. The field enumeration conducted in September 2020 was synchronized with the population administrative data managed by Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
• Compared to the 2010 Population Census, the population of Indonesia showed an increase about 32.6 million people. The figure indicates an annual population growth rate of 1.25% in the 2010-2020 period, lower than the 2000-2010 period annual population growth rate which was 1.49%.
• The total female population reached 133.5 million and male population reached 136.7 million, equivalent to a gender parity of 102 men for every 100 women.
• Based on age groups, the majority of Indonesia’s population (70.7%) is in the productive age group (15-64 years), indicating Indonesia is still in the demographic dividend period.
• The proportion of people aged 60+ in the total population of Indonesia has also increased from 7.6% in 2010 to 9.8% in 2020.
• Indonesian population is dominated by Generation Z and Generation Millennials with the proportions of 27.9% and 25.9%, respectively.
• Based on the distribution of population, Java Island occupies the top position with the largest population. The whole of area Java Island, only 7% of the Indonesian territory, is home to 151.6 million people or 56.1% of the total Indonesian population.
