Working Groups
WG1: Statistical Indicators Specific to OIC Member Countries

Referring to the decision of the 2010 Meeting of National Statistical Organisations (NSOs) of the OIC Member Countries, “The Expert Group Meeting on New Indicators” was held on 21-22 December 2010 in Amman, Jordan to discuss the needs and requirements of new indicators specific to the OIC Member Countries. In that meeting, a preliminary framework for the indicators specific to the Islamic Countries was identified. By considering the need to broaden this study, it was decided to establish a working group on “Statistical Indicators Specific to OIC Member Countries” in the First Session of OIC-StatCom. Main objective of this working group identify priority areas specific to the Member Countries, to develop conceptual and methodological background for the selected indicators reflecting common values and behaviour of the Muslim Community. Jordan assumed the role of Lead Country to manage the activities of this working group.

WG2: Development of a Strategic Vision for the OIC-StatCom

OIC-StatCom is a new initiative aiming to create a dynamic platform for sharing knowledge and exchange of experiences towards an effective statistical capacity building at the OIC level. Therefore, the delegates who participated in the First Session of OIC-StatCom agreed to set up a working group on “Development of a Strategic Vision for the OIC-StatCom”. Main objective of this working group is to develop a strategic vision defining short, medium and long term activities to achieve the goals of this initiative and to make the Commission work efficiently. Indonesia assumed the role of Lead Country to manage the activities of this working group.

WG3: Development of a Certification and Accreditation Programme for Statistical Professionals

The Central Informatics Organisation (CIO) of Bahrain proposed in the First Session of the OIC-StatCom to initiate a program on the “Accreditation of Statistical Professionals” specific to OIC Member Countries. It is envisaged that such a well-designed program will help official statisticians to improve their professional competencies and it was decided to establish a working group on “Development of a Certification and Accreditation Programme for Statistical Professionals”. The main objective of this working group is to develop conceptual and methodological background of the accreditation program for professional statisticians working for statistical organisations of the OIC Member Countries. Bahrain assumed the role of Lead Country to manage the activities of this working group.

TCE1: Islamic Banking and Finance Statistics

The Second Session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Statistical Commission (OIC-StatCom), co-organised by the Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC) and the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) on 13-15 May 2012 in Izmir, Turkey, profoundly reviewed the report and the documents prepared by the Working Group on “Statistical Indicators Specific to OIC Member States”. Due to the extensive scope of the issue, the Commission decided to follow a theme-based priority approach in order to identify a roadmap for depicting the relevant indicators specific to OIC Member Countries. Considering the theme of Islamic Banking and Finance as high priority, it was decided to establish a Technical Committee of Experts (TCE) on “Islamic Banking and Finance Statistics”.

TCE2: Executive Work Plan for the Short, Medium and Long Term Implementation of the OIC-StatCom Strategic Vision

TCE3: Procedural Details of the Accreditation Program for Statistical Professionals in OIC Member States

The Second Session of the OIC-StatCom endorsed the Accreditation and Certification Programme for Official Statistical Professionals in OIC Member States (OStat Program) which was developed under the leadership of the Central Informatics Organisation (CIO) of Bahrain. Furthermore, the Second Session of the OIC-StatCom endorsed the establishment of the Technical Committee of Experts (TCE) to follow up the Procedural Details of the OStat Programme that will be led by the CIO of Bahrain. This TCE works to ensure the full implementation of the Ostat Programme at the OIC level and assists the task team which will be established for the initial level implementation of the OStat Programme.

TCE4: Gender Related Issues

Considering the proposal of National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) of United Arab Emirates, the Second Session of the OIC-StatCom agreed to express the common view of the member countries on newly formed themes and indicators such as gender statistics in a coordinated manner so as to enhance studies of global statistical community in these areas by reflecting values of OIC Member Countries. In this regard, the Commission decided to establish a Technical Committee of Experts (TCE) “Gender Related Issues” with an aim to follow up the studies carried out at the international level.

TCE5: Comprehensive Profile on the Population and Housing Census Experiences and Practices of OIC Member Countries

In accordance with the Resolutions of the Second Session of the OIC-StatCom, this Technical Committee of Experts (TCE) has been set up to define the structure of a comprehensive profile that include all the relevant phases of censuses and to compile the different country experiences and practices from OIC Member Countries.
