The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) issued a press release on 28 November 2023 revealing the losses suffered by the Agricultural Sector in Palestine as a result of the Israeli occupation aggression on the Gaza Strip.
The agricultural sector plays a vital role in Gaza Strip's GDP, contributing about 11% in 2022 and providing crucial employment opportunities. The direct daily losses due to halted production are estimated at USD 1.6 million, exacerbated by the destruction of agricultural property, resulting in a total loss exceeding USD 180 million. The recent Israeli occupation aggression caused extensive damage to agricultural areas, particularly in North Gaza, impacting 53% of the total agricultural area.
Vegetable production, which constitutes 53% of Gaza's agricultural area, has been severely affected, leading to disruptions in the supply chain, increased costs, and hindrances to water and electricity access. Olive trees, making up 60% of horticultural trees, were comprehensively targeted, affecting 63% of the total horticultural tree area.
Livestock farms in Gaza, especially in Khan Yunis and North Gaza, suffered significant losses, impacting poultry, sheep, goats, and cattle. The destruction of livestock farms further exacerbates the challenges faced by the agricultural sector.
The recent aggression has also resulted in a loss of household sources of local agricultural production for 44% of Palestinian households in Gaza, leading to increased food insecurity.
