20th Session of the Committee for the Coordination of Statistical Activities (CCSA)

The Twentieth Session of the Committee for the Coordination of Statistical Activities (CCSA) was held in Frankfurt am Main on 17-19 September 2012. Being the co-chair of the Committee for the term 2012-2012, European Central Bank (ECB) hosted the Session where Mrs. Zehra Zümrüt Selçuk, researcher, represented the Centre thereat.

During the Session, the main achievements of CCSA since its establishment in September 2002 and the current activities were summarized by United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to get a broad perspective while planning the way forward. Aiming to contribute more to the development, integration and the coordination of the global statistical system through achieving more significant results, the possible issues of future agenda were discussed in detail based on the collaborative presentation of International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank.

After the regional viewpoint of United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA) on the coordination mechanism for the global statistical system, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) presented a report on the use of different data sources for the production of international statistics. The progress reports of the Task Teams that have been working on (1) Defining profile of international statisticians and recruitment policy (2) Training of international statisticians; staff exchange and mobility were also among the items for discussion.

European Central Bank (ECB) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the co-chairs of CCSA, gave information about the 2012 CCSA Conference on “Best Practice for Ensuring Quality in International Statistics: Making International Statistics fit for Sound Decision-Making”. The participants were also briefed about the Global Inventory of Statistical Standards, Busan Action Plan and the Virtual Statistical System by United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), Paris21 and World Bank, respectively.
