TurkStat Released the Results of the 2021 Population and Housing Census

Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) released the Results of the 2021 Population and Housing Census produced on a regular basis by the Address Based Population Registration System (ABPRS) on 19 December 2022 in Ankara, Türkiye.

According to the statistics produced from ABPRS on an annual basis with reference date as 31 December 2021 , the key findings of Population and Housing Census of 2021 are as follows:

  • The population residing in Türkiye increased by more than one million people compared to the previous year, and reached to 84,680,273 people as of 31 December 2021.
  • Annual population growth rate increased to 12.7 per thousand in 2021 from 5.5 per thousand in 2020.
  • The median age of the population in Türkiye increased to 33.1 in 2021 from 32.7 in 2020. The median age increased from 32.4 from 31.7 for males and from 33.8 to 33.1 for females.
  • The proportion of the working age population aged 15-64 is recorded as 67.9% in 2021 slightly increased from 67.7% in 2020. On the other hand, the proportion of child population aged 0-14 decreased from 22.8% to 22.4% and the proportion of population aged 65 and over increased from 9.5% to 9.7% in the same period.
  • The population residing in Istanbul increased by 378,448 people compared to the previous year and reached to 15,840,900 people in 2021. İstanbul, constituting 18.71% of Türkiye’s population, was followed by Ankara with 5,747,325 inhabitants.
  • Number of people per square kilometre was 110 for Türkiye and 3,049 for İstanbul
