Within the framework of the Programme of Action for 2021-2025 set under the OIC-StatCom Strategic Vision for 2030 and its Webinar Series on Statistical Experience Sharing, SESRIC organized a Webinar on “Towards a Methodology for Production and Dissemination of Islamic Tourism Indicators” on 23 August 2023. The webinar was conducted in collaboration with the National Statistical Offices of Indonesia, Iran, and Saudi Arabia as well as the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) and World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). CrescentRating and DinarStandard provided insights of the private sector as well.

The webinar was attended by 80 official statisticians and tourism experts from 28 OIC countries as well as international experts working or interested in the Islamic tourism sector. The Webinar provided a space to elaborate on a possible framework for the general methodology of Islamic tourism indicators. SESRIC briefed the OIC countries on its study titled as ‘Strategic Roadmap for Development of Islamic Tourism in OIC Member Countries’ concerning data and monitoring. Member countries have benefitted from the good practices and knowledge exchange on how to develop the required standards and mechanisms to produce and disseminate such indicators within their national statistical systems.

Including discussions about the current applications, challenges faced and other perspectives by all stakeholders, the Webinar covered the following topics:

• Significance of data and monitoring for Islamic Tourism
• Islamic tourism from a statistical perspective
• Challenges in measuring Islamic tourism
• Proposed actions and policies for development of Islamic tourism indicators
• Good practices from the OIC member countries
• Statistical perspectives of regional and international institutions
