As part of its Statistical Experience Sharing Webinar Series, SESRIC, in collaboration with UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), organised a webinar on “Foreign Direct Investment and Competitiveness Statistics” on 17 June 2026.

The webinar brought together 65 experts from National Statistical Offices (NSOs), central banks, ministries, investment authorities, and other relevant institutions of 24 OIC Member Countries, as well as representatives of OIC institutions and UN agencies.

The webinar was organized also within the framework of the implementation of the joint activities agreed during the 16th Session of the UN-OIC Meeting on Cooperation, held on 22–24 July 2024 in Astana, Republic of Kazakhstan, and in line with the Matrix of Activities within the Framework of UN-OIC Cooperation for 2024–2026.

The webinar aimed to strengthen the technical capacities of OIC Member Countries in FDI and competitiveness statistics. The sessions covered the following key areas:

• recent methodological developments and international standards in the compilation and interpretation of FDI statistics;
• recent global and regional trends in FDI and selected competitiveness-related indicators, with a particular focus on OIC Member Countries;
• country and institutional experiences in compiling, disseminating and using FDI and competitiveness-related data for policy analysis;
• data gaps, capacity-building needs and technical cooperation opportunities for strengthening national statistical systems in this domain.

The webinar featured technical presentations by UNCTAD, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), addressing methodologies, international standards and global statistical practices. Country and institutional presentations by the Bureau of National Statistics of Kazakhstan (BNS), the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Group highlighted national experiences, good practices and practical approaches in compiling and using FDI and competitiveness statistics for evidence-based policymaking.

The webinar provided a platform for knowledge exchange among participating institutions and contributed to enhancing technical cooperation and statistical capacity in the field of FDI and competitiveness statistics across the OIC region.
