Date : 02 March 2021 Venue : Ramallah Palestine

The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) released a video on YouTube titled “Making Numbers Count in Times of a Crisis” in collaboration with PARIS21 on 2 March 2021.

In the video, H.E. Dr. Ola AWAD, President of the PCBS, mentioned that Palestinians are dealing with many kinds of crises and the current coronavirus pandemic has made the lives of Palestinians more difficult and challenging.

Dr. Awad informed that PCBS has been focusing its work on aspects related to administrative life, organizing working spaces, and statistical matters to manage the current health crisis and mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the production of statistics. Due to the pandemic, PCBS had to immediately cease its field operations and turn to remote work resources like telephone while the statistical teams continued working at the PCBS premises as well as from home. The video presented that PCBS was able to create close bonds with the government, public sector and various ministries during the pandemic.

Dr. Awad also mentioned that during the current crisis, PCBS conducted two additional surveys, namely a socio-economic survey to measure the impact of COVID-19 on households and a survey to assess the effects of the pandemic on the Palestinian economy. PCBS was one of the pioneering national statistical offices in the world preparing economic forecasts and estimating the losses that the market would experience until the end of 2020.

Dr. Awad underlined the importance of communication during this time of crisis, therefore PCBS shared information on social media networks to reach all groups in the society. Dr. Awad thanked all the official, local and international media which complemented the role and duties of PCBS.
